Hostel Description
The popular New Excelsior Backpacker is located in an enchanting historic building right in the heart of Christchurchs new urban hub. Designed by one of New Zealand's foremost architects of the 19th Century (W.B. Armson), the 1881 building is now classified as 'historic'.
This hostel offers a warm and friendly environment with all the benefits of an inner-city location. It is nestled amongst popular bars, cafes, restaurants and boutique shopping, and is only minutes walk to Cathedral Square, the arts centre, museum and art gallery, public transportation, movie theatres and supermarkets.
All our spotlessly clean rooms are non-smoking. We offer dorm rooms for 2-8 people, double, single and twin rooms. Prices range from $20.00 per person, per night. 24-hour check-in can be arranged upon demand, and guests have 24-hour key access to the hostel.
We are small enough to provide a relaxing and comfortable stay, yet large enough to boast some great facilities. The New Excelsior has a large kitchen and dining room, and a comfortable lounge room with a big screen TV, free videos and DVDs. We offer a guest laundry, secure bike lock-up, book exchange, 24-hr internet access and free luggage storage.
There is a free barbeque available for use on our large outdoor sun deck perfect for socializing! Alternatively head downstairs for a lazy breakfast or cappuccino at the neighboring cafe, or enjoy a few drinks at the New Excelsior Sports Bar.
Our staff are knowledgeable and friendly, and are happy to help answer your questions and help with your travel plans. Activity and transportation bookings are available through our extensive travel desk, and we are agents for Stray, Magic, Kiwi Experience, Intercity, Interislander, and many other activities and transport options. Hostel Directions
We are located in the centre of Christchurch, on the corner of Manchester and High Streets.
From the airport:
Catch a public bus for $7, get off the bus in the city centre and walk half a block to Manchester St. Cross the road and we are behind the big palm tree. Buses run during the day from approximately 6am until approximately 10.30pm. If you arrive at night, or don't want to bus, you can catch a 24-hour airport shuttle for $15, and they will drop you off directly at our door.
From the train station
Catch a shuttle ($7) or taxi to our door. The distance is only 3km so it's not expensive. The train station provides a free morning shuttle from the backpackers back to the station - to connect with both the passenger trains each day.
