The historic Camphouse situated almost 1000 meters up Mount Taranaki / Mount Egmont at North Egmont is the highest commercial accommodation on Mount Taranaki / Mount Egmont which is an ideal location for people seeking quiet surroundings and stunning views of the North Taranaki coast and Central North Island. It also offers historic atmosphere and access to the beautiful forests and high altitude scenery of Egmont National Park.
Mt Taranaki's 2,518 meter summit is more accessible than any mountain of comparable height in New Zealand. Egmont National Park is an area of unique rainforests and alpine scenery. It provides opportunities for walks, tramps, picnics, photography, bird watching, skiing, mountaineering, rock climbing and generally enjoying the variety of scenery and habitats of New Zealand?s most attractive and symmetrical mountain.
Walks from here are a ' must see' attraction because of their unique enchanted forests. High rainfall of around 7 meters a year, combined with regular frost conditions, produce fascinating gnarled and twisted moss and lichen covered trees straight out of a fairytale goblin scene. To see is to believe, with Mt Taranaki snow clad peak dominating the skyline behind us. The main climbing route to the summit starts here and you need to allow 6 to 8 hours for the return trip.

Hostel Directions
Access is located from Egmont Village on State Highway 3, turn up Egmont Road and follow for 16km to the road end. New Plymouth to North Egmont is a pleasant 30 minute drive along sealed roads. A shuttle bus can be arranged from our Egmont Eco Lodge in New Plymouth.
