About Lyons Lake Stay
Lyons Lake Stay - a modern, affordable "boutique style" backpacker or Bed and Breakfast accommodation catering for the needs of the independent traveller. NO Traffic Noise, Sulphur Smells or Bus Crowds. A secure, peaceful setting opposite the Lake, nestled amongst Native Bush. The ideal location to take time out from your busy travelling schedule, for a stay in a unique pristine paradise, relax in the front garden with views of the lake and listen to the songs of the native birdlife.
Lyons Lake Stay is a cosy, friendly backpackers, with fully-equipped kitchen and dining facilities for guests, and also opens onto your own private courtyard/BBQ area. Lake Okareka is a natural playground with many fantastic activities on your doorstep, just 10 minutes(12km) from Central rotorua and serves as a great base for visiting attractions further afield such as:
5 minutes from Lake Tarawera and the Buried Village
10 minutes from Rotorua and all Thermal tours and attractions
15 minutes from the Airport
1 hour from Hobbiton! Visit one of the locations used in The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
1 hour from Lake Taupo
1½ - 2 hours from the Central Plateau, Tongariro National Park and the ski areas
1 hour from East Coast beaches like Mt. Maunganui
2½ hours from Auckland
Rooms-only 3 rooms.The twin room can also be a double or triple as it has a double and a single bed.
Mountain Biking
Lyons Lake Stay is centrally located with easy access to great mountain biking tracks. Rotorua is fast becoming a world famous destination for mountain biking with a range of tracks for all abilities. We have four bikes for hire, or feel free to bring your own.
Kayaking
The lake is just across the road and is the location for many water sports. We have a couple of hire kayaks with lifejackets and paddles available. This is a unique way to see the lake, and get up close and personal with our native flora and fauna.
Trout Fishing
Lake Okareka is nestled in amongst many beautiful lakes. We can organise a scenic trip, including a stop at a hot water beach to soak in the natural thermal waters, or guided trout fishing trip on any of the nearby lakes. The native rainbow trout are fun to catch and delicious to eat.
Scenic Walks
Lake Okareka has a beautiful lake-edge boardwalk or you can take a bush walk and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. You will see a large range of native wildlife and plants.

Hostel Directions
How to Find Us From the Rotorua city centre, follow signs to the Airport along SH30. At the roundabout, turn right onto Tarawera Road and keep driving for several kilometres to the Blue Lake. Do not take the first turning for Okareka Loop Road! Keep going until you are past the Blue Lake Holiday Park, and take the second Okareka Loop Road turning. After another kilometre or so, look for Summit Road on the left - we are situated 20 metres past the Summit Road turn off. Look for our sign on the left.
