The far better alternative is to take the overnight Sleeper-Train from Hualumphong Station in Bangkok. For around 1300 baht (price at the trainstaion) you will get your own bed with ac, a food cart/menu and can stretch your legs whenever you feel like it.
If you leaving before 7.30pm at Bangkok, you will arrive in Chumphon in the early morning 5am, still enough time to catch all the boats to Koh Tao. Please be aware of hawkers at the trainstation at Chumpon, trying to sell overpriced boattickets or divingpackages. We can recommend FameTour Guesthouse and Restaurant (5 min walk from the trainstation! opens 4am), where you can wait for the free pickup to the peer at 6am.
