Book Thailand's Best Hostels

Australia Hostels

You’ll find many hostels in Thailand, especially in Bangkok and Chiang Mai and the other cities that attract lots of Western tourists. Hotels all over the country tend to be cheap by Western standards, but especially in Thailand’s many resort areas the prices can really be up there. There aren’t too many traditional hostels in Thailand’s resort areas, but in almost all cases you’ll find affordable budget hotels listed here that will appeal to that same Thailand hostel crowd.

Of course most people’s first stop is in Bangkok and probably half the hostels in Thailand are located in its massive capital. One thing that is particularly great about staying in a Thailand hostel in your first stop in Bangkok is that they are great places to meet other travelers who can give you up to the minute advice on places to check out as well as places to avoid. If you are heading to the Full Moon Party and you check into a hostel in Thailand in the weeks leading up to it you’ll be meeting people who just attended the previous one and who can give you great advice and tips.

Chiang Mai is also a major center for traditional Thailand hostels, but hotel prices in that city tend to be so affordable you should really think twice before booking yourself into a dorm room. Sure, most of the Thailand hostels are well maintained and comfortable, but particularly in Chiang Mai and other cities nearby you can get a private room for two people for under US$10 per night. In Bangkok a room in that price range is likely to be a nightmare so the hostels there are a key way to make the city affordable, but if you can book yourself into a private room for the same price as a hostel in Thailand it would be tempting to go with the private room.

Of course, aside from the bigger cities and their impressive temples you’ve got loads of beach and island resorts in Thailand. You won’t find too many traditional hostels in these areas, although there are a few nice Thailand hostels in Ko Samui and in Phuket. On these pages you’ll see plenty of listings for budget hotels in those cities that will usually appeal to the Thailand hostel crowd. In many cases you can get a private room in a resort area for under US$15 per night for two people, but look very carefully at places like this before you lock in your booking.

If an island or beach area has a dozen places listed between US$30 and US$100 per night you have to be very suspicious of the one offered for US$15. It will either be in a poor location or have minimal services or both. Since nearly every place listed here includes a detailed map to their location it becomes critical to check those out before booking the cheapest hostel in Thailand only to find you are 5 kilometers outside of the city you thought you were booking into.
