Australia Hostels

This city in far northeastern Queensland has a lot to recommend it for travelers. There are quite a few hotels throughout the city and prices are reasonable compared to most other larger Australian cities, but helpfully there are several hostels in Townsville that make visiting even more affordable.

Townsville actually has a twin, as the city of Thuringowa shares a border with the city creating one large metropolitan area. But the focus of Townsville is the waterfront and the harbour area so all the hostels in Townsville are actually in Townsville and all bunched together in the city center area. Thuringowa is inland so it often gets forgotten by visitors.

With over 320 days of sunshine each year, Townsville is one of the sunniest cities in the country. There is good diving nearby, but one of the main attractions is that it’s easy to reach the Outback from the city, which is rare for a coastal community. Many people arriving in Townsville are preparing for their Outback adventures and are able to hang out near the coastal breezes before taking the plunge into the interior.

The focus of the city center is in the area right around the harbor. And fortunately all the hostels in Townsville are in this neighborhood so the location of any of them should be agreeable.

Also, hostels in Australia are usually called “backpackers” but they occasionally have different names. Places with affordable dorm beds are quite common throughout Australia and they almost all welcome guests of any age. Most backpackers in the country also have private rooms so they can be a great way to combine a little sleeping privacy with an affordable price and all the other friendly hostel features like shared kitchens and social outings.

The Globetrotters Harbourside Inn has some of the cheapest beds in town. Their 7-bed dorms start around $AUD23 per person, and breakfast and dinner is included with the price. The also have rooms with 3 and 4 beds in the same price range. The Globetrotters also has a new wing to house their private motel-style rooms. The dorm rooms are located just across the bridge from the main entertainment district while the private rooms are located right in the heart of the nightlife area. They have private rooms for 2, 3, and 4 people, with prices starting around $AUD25 per person, although most are closer to $AUD35.

The Civic Guest House is another Townsville hostel located in the Central Business District. Their cheapest beds are in their 4 and 6-bed dorms starting around $AUD25 per night. Food isn’t included, but they do have self-catering facilities and there are stores around so you can whip something up yourself for cheap. They do have free BBQs on Fridays though. The Civic Guest House also offers private twin and double rooms starting around $AUD30 per person, and they’ve also got private singles available starting around $AUD55 per night. They aren’t as close to the harbour as the others, but they are only a 5-minute walk away.
