As one of the major tourist centers on the North Island, it’s no surprise that there are quite a few hostels in Taupo to choose from. This area is a magnet for all types of visitors to New Zealand and locals alike, and the hotels in the area tend to be expensive, but the Taupo hostels are all quite affordable by comparison. Especially during summer the area gets jammed with adventure seekers and nature lovers alike. During these months it’s very important to book your hostel in Taupo early to avoid being shut out or having to pay a fortune for a hotel room instead.

In Australia and New Zealand it’s very common for hostels to be called “backpackers” instead, but they are the exact same thing and they cater to everyone. Here in Taupo most of the hostels are called lodges, but again they are basically hostels and they all have cheap dorm rooms.

Many years ago hostels were only meant for students and young hippies, but the days of curfews and daytime lock-outs are pretty much over. In fact it’s very common to see travelers of all ages staying at hostels these days. There are many benefits in addition to the lower price so even senior citizens who travel frequently often stay at these places.

Nearly all the Taupo hostels offer private rooms in addition to the cheaper dorm beds, so even if you prefer to sleep in a little privacy it’s easy to find what you are looking for at these places. Of course, for the room to truly be private you have to book all the beds in that room, so groups of 2 or 3 traveling together should have an easy time finding private rooms at the hostels in Taupo, but singles and larger groups are a bit more of a challenge.

Taupo is a large recreational area that spreads way out, but the center of town is quite dense. Several of the hostels in Taupo are located very close to the town center, which is an excellent location for people traveling on public transportation. If you’ve rented a car or a campervan you can stay at any of the more remote Taupo hostels, but car parking is available and easy at nearly all of them.

The Tiki Lodge is a popular Taupo hostel that gets high ratings from previous guests. During summer it can fill up early so make sure you book early. They are a 2-minute walk from the heart of town with its bars and nightclubs so this is an excellent location for anyone wanting to paint the town red in the evenings. Their cheapest dorm beds start around $US18 per night, and their private double and triple rooms are only a few dollars more per person.

The Go Global Backpackers is also in the heart of Taupo’s city center, but they’ve also got a restaurant, bar, and nightclub attached so one doesn’t need to go far if staying here. Their dorm beds start around $US20 per night, and they also have private rooms just a bit higher as well.
