Singapore is a fascinating little country/city/island rolled all into one, but it stands out as being noticeably more expensive to visit than most of its Asian neighbors. Fortunately there are many hostels in Singapore to help keep prices reasonable and enhance your social experience at the same time. There are obviously many hotels in Singapore and they come in all prices ranges. Some of the more affordable ones are grouped in on the Singapore hostels page, so consider them carefully before locking in a bed at a Singapore hostel. You might actually be able to afford a nicer place than you thought.

The main shopping district is centered around Orchard Road and very few of the hostels in Singapore are in that area, although the Orchard Road is home to tons of hotels. Singapore has some very dense parts of the city, but in many cases they are spread out from each other. Fortunately the subway system is excellent and quite cheap, so when choosing your Singapore hostel the neighborhood isn’t a huge factor as long as you are close to a subway station.

There is not really an ideal neighborhood for your Singapore stay. No matter where you stay in the city you’ll be close to a few things and will have to travel around to visit other things. Again, as long as you are located near a subway station you can choose just about any hostel in Singapore and be okay. You also tend to get what you pay for in this country so if one place is half the price of another it’s likely there are good reasons why. Some cities are maddening in that some of the more expensive hostels aren’t even as nice as the cheap ones, but in Singapore that’s rarely the case.

If you haven’t been to Singapore yet you will probably be pleasantly surprised to find out how modern it is. It’s probably on par with Tokyo or Seoul, and internet cafes and such are easy to find. If you are traveling with a laptop or other wireless device you should make sure you book into a Singapore hostel that advertises good wifi. Most places do have great internet services for guests, but not all of them so it’s worth taking a close look. Some of the hostels also have CD burning and photo printing services available, which can really come in handy if you are on the road for a long time.

The Hive Backpackers Hostel has all the modern hookups and beds starting around $US12 per night, including breakfast. They are one of the higher rated hostels in Singapore so if you want to stay there it’s advisable to book well ahead.

The New 7^th Storey Hotel is actually a nine-story hotel and hostel that caters to budget travelers. They have beds in 4-person dorm rooms starting around $US13 per night all the way up to private deluxe twin rooms with all the amenities starting around $US32 per night.
