Australia Hostels

Four Mile Beach is the main attraction in Port Douglas, but it’s not the only thing the city has going for it. There are quite a few hotels in the area, in all price ranges, but there are also a few hostels in Port Douglas that help make the beaches affordable for budget tourists and those who care more about the place they are visiting than the luxury of their room while staying there.

Being close to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, this is a tourist mecca and the town’s modest population can as much as quadruple during the peak months of May through September. This is most definitely a hot spot for visitors from Victoria and Tasmania during the winter months so reservations should be made well in advance if you are coming during that stretch.

The Sheraton Mirage started the rebirth of the area and many other 4 and 5-star hotels have followed suit, but the hostels in Port Douglas are still quite reasonable. The kite surfing draws tourists down to the southern section of Four Mile Beach, but most of the Port Douglas hostels are in the main town area on near the northern end.

By the way, if you aren’t from this part of the world you should know that hostels down here are almost always called “backpackers” and sometimes other names as well. Dorm rooms are fairly common in Australia since the residents here love to travel themselves so the national network of backpackers/hostels is a common strategy for people trying to stretch their own holiday budget while seeing their own country.

And just as the hostel scene has change all over the world, it’s done so in Australia as well. Very few places have nighttime curfews anymore, and daytime lockouts are even more rare. A few places have age limits for some of their dorm rooms, but these are increasingly rare as well. Actually, most hostels/backpackers in the country have private rooms along with their cheaper dorms. This allows any budget traveler, even those who’d like a bit of privacy while they sleep, to save some money and still take advantage of the self-catering kitchens and other hostel activities.

The Parrot Fish Port Douglas Backpackers has the cheapest beds in town starting around $AUD25 per night in their 8-bed dorm room. This place is very close to the marina and they’ve got all the usual hostel facilities such as internet and a common kitchen, but they’ve also got a pool, a restaurant, and a bar. This is a highly-rated place that fills up early so book as soon as you can if you want to stay here.

The Port O’Call Lodge is an eco-friendly Port Douglas hostel just a little further from the marina. They have 4-bed dorm rooms starting around $AUD31 per person, but they’ve also got deluxe motel rooms starting around $AUD59 per person per night. They’ve got a lagoon-style pool and bike rentals. There is a free bus to Port Douglas for anyone staying at least two nights.
