A huge city that is basically on its own and far from everything else in Australia, Perth still has a compact city center so it’s quite easy to visit for most travelers. The area is known for its miles and miles of uncrowded beaches, but most of the hostels in Perth are located in or near the city center, which is called the Central Business District, just as in every other Australian city. There are a couple of Perth hostels on the beach, so if you care little about the main attractions in the city you can choose one of those, but they are quite far from everything but the beaches themselves.

While the center of the city is compact, there are a few Perth hostels located on the outskirts. They tend to be less expensive, but it’s generally not a great idea to go all this way and then try to save a few dollars on a bed in trade for spending hours each day going back and forth. There are plenty of hostels in Perth right in the Central Business District so unless parking your car is a huge priority you’d be advised to stay near the center.

Just next to the CBD is the area of Northbridge. This is the bohemian and artsy part of town and together with the CBD, this is where most of the good Perth nightlife can be found. If funky boutiques and offbeat rock clubs are high on your list you should probably choose a Perth hostel right in the Northbridge district, but these areas are close enough to walk back and forth so it’s not a huge deal either way.

By the way, in Australia hostels are almost always known as “backpackers” even though they are basically the exact same thing. There are rarely age limits in Australian hostels and since travel is such a huge deal in this country it’s well known that backpackers places are a great deal for all budget travel. In other words, you’ll likely be seeing all different kinds of travelers at your Perth hostel, and not just kids with backpacks.

The Underground Backpackers is located right in Northbridge and they have beds in their 4-bed dorm rooms starting around $AUD25 per night, but they also have private twin rooms starting around $AUD31 per person, all including breakfast. They’ve got internet access and loads of other hostel features so the private rooms can be a great deal for those wanting a bit of privacy along with all the fun of staying in a Perth hostel.

The Exclusive Backpackers is located in the CBD and their cheapest dorm beds start around $AUD23 per night, but they’ve also got private rooms for between 1 and 3 people with prices not too much higher.

Ocean Beach Backpackers is right on the beach so it’s far from the CBD. Their dorm beds start around $AUD23 per night, and they’ve got all the usual features of a hostel as well as their own bar.
