Australia Hostels

A Mission Beach hostel has always been a great place to stay for trips out to Dunk Island, but in recent years the city has become a popular tourist destination in itself.

Mission Beach began as five smaller villages that have now grown together into one continuous city. Although the population of Mission Beach is only a thousand people, there are often that many tourists there and travelers passing through. Because of the originally wide spread nature of the collection of villages, Mission Beach remains delightfully uncompressed.

The most popular destination from Mission Beach is Dunk Island, part of the Family Islands off the coast of Australia. The island is home to a secluded resort as well as many sandy beaches and an assortment of interesting wildlife. A walking trail around the circumference of the island is a picturesque way to take in the scenery; there are also campgrounds available for visitors within the National Park.

Rainforest surrounds Mission Beach on one side and tours through the canopy jungle are a popular way to learn about the fragile ecosystem. A local flightless bird, the Cassowary, is facing extinction due to deforestation concentrating predators such as wild hogs.

As a tribute to the dwindling Cassowary bird, Mission Beach constructed a 5X5 meter Cassowary bird in the Wongaling Beach shopping center. The work is part of the 146 part "Big Australia" series of monuments, structures and sculptures that represent local Australian culture.

Mission Beach hostels are located right on Wongaling Beach, just blocks from the sand. Rooms start at 13 Euros a night at both of Mission Beach's hostels and both the 'Retreat Hostel' and 'Scotty's Beach House' offer both shared and private rooms. Private rooms are about 15 Euros per person. While 'Scotty's Beach House' provides fun and an abundance of people, drinks and activities, the 'Retreat Hostel' is a more laid-back style of accommodations where your vacation will not revolve around your hostel's social scene. 'Retreat Hostel' allows you to spend your days out on the beach or touring the rainforest.

If you would like some ready-made adventure, both hostels offer package tours and adrenaline filled activities through all of the local company's and they might even be able to get you a special rate as a guest of their facilities.

Both hostels ask that you check in with them before your arrival and both have been known to fill their rooms during the tourist heavy dry-season that is winter in the northern hemisphere. Booking online ahead of time for your stay at 'Scotty's' or the 'Retreat Hostel' will ensure that you have a room when you arrive and that you are able to participate in the activities with all the other backpackers and travelers at your hostel.

But if hanging out at the hostels sounds too much like spending a night in, the hostels are located near what could be considered the center of Mission Beach and it is easy to find some company for a night out when you're staying at a hostel.
