Book the Best Hostels in Malacca
There are several hostels in Malacca (sometimes spelled Melaka), but it might not be too obvious at first. None of them goes by the tradition name of hostel, but several places in the city do offered cheap dorm beds for budget travelers. Hotels in Malacca can range from affordable to extravagant, but the Malacca hostels all offer beds so cheap that everyone can afford them.
This is actually quite a big city so location is very important. Several of the Malacca hostels are located in the Heritage Center and this is an ideal place to stay for most people. This city has good public transportation, but if you are staying in the Heritage area the whole place is pretty much walkable.
All the Malacca hostels also offer private rooms, and in fact several budget places that are listed among the Malacca hostels only offer private rooms. If you are set on a dorm bed you’ll have little trouble finding it, but with prices in the city being what they are the temptation will be great to stay in a private room even if you are staying in one of the hostels in Malacca that offer the dorms.
Whether they call themselves guest houses or inns, the hostels in Malacca that offer dorm beds are open to all ages. Hostels used to be mainly for young people, but these days hostels around the world are almost all open to everyone. Certainly the largest groups of people you’ll see are younger backpackers, but even older people are using hostels in Malacca and elsewhere as a great way to save money and meet new people in the process.
Location is always important when you are traveling so when choosing a hostel in Malacca, whether it be one with dorm rooms or not, it’s wise to pick your neighborhood carefully. It’s often possible to save a bit by booking a place further out of town, but this decision could mean you’ll end up spending hours per day going back and forth. In some expensive cities this compromise can be worth it or sometimes the only reason the city is affordable to visit in the first place, but with prices like these you should definitely pay a bit more for a prime location.
Most of the places listed on the Malacca hostels page have a map link on their detail page so it’s very easy to see if they are in a central location or not. Since you can stay in the Heritage Center for under US$5 per night it would be crazy to stay elsewhere to save money.
Sunny’s Inn is one of the more centrally-located hostels in Malacca. They’ve got a bar, restaurant, and nightclub of their own so you can have a great time without going outside, but their central location is still ideal. Beds in their dorms start around US$3 per night, and the private rooms are less than a dollar more for each person if there are two of you.
