There are no traditional hostels on Ko Pha Ngan (which is usually just two words as Ko Phangan), but there are several budget places that will appeal to the Ko Phangan hostel crowd. Prices for hotels and resorts on this island run the range from damn cheap up to astronomical, but those who are looking for a hostel in Ko Phangan are obviously looking for the budget end of things.

One reason there are no traditional hostels in Ko Phangan is there are a few places that are so cheap for their private rooms that there isn’t much demand for a hostel with dorm beds and lockers for your stuff. Who would want to pay US$8 for a dorm bed when you can get a private room or bungalow for under US$5 per person?

Of course one of the main attractions on this island is the famous Full Moon Party on Haad Rin Beach. Quite a few of the listings on this page are near the peninsula where the parties are held, but if you are coming specifically for the Full Moon Party it’s important that you book well ahead. The island gets jammed a few days before the full moon and prices do tend to rise.

The community around the Haad Rin Peninsula has grown to be quite active so there are parties and clubs going every night. If you are a backpacker type and you want to engage in the local party scene you can come any time and there will be something similar going on, but of course the peak is the full moon night itself.

The island is quite big and several places are not close to the Haad Rin area, so be careful when booking. The Ko Phangan hostel crowd is in full force in the Haad Rin area and there are quite a few budget places to stay. Many of them operate very informally, and during the non-peak times of the month and of the year you can often just walk up to a place and get a room. But that’s a dangerous way to travel in an area that can be a bit unpredictable. Since reserving a cheap place in advance is easy enough it would be crazy to risk it, although people do that every day.

The major downside risk for the Ko Phangan hostel crowd is not so much of not being able to find a room, but rather not being able to find a cheap room. There are quite a few places on the island where you can get a room for two people for around US$10 per night, but there are also many really expensive places as well. You really want to avoid arriving on the island only to find all the cheap places are taken so your only options left are sleeping on the beach and getting hassled by cops every hour, or checking into an expensive resort that you didn’t want but was the only bed left when you arrived.
