The capital of Tasmania has about a quarter million people in the metropolitan area, and that makes up more than half the population of the entire island. Nearly all tours of Tasmania begin and end here so it’s convenient that there are many hostels in Hobart for the budget traveler.

The center city is rather compact and most of the Hobart hostels are bunched together in the main tourist district. So the location of your Hobart hostel isn’t a huge deal unless you choose to stay at one of the places further out of town. The wharf area is the center of nightlife, although there are random places throughout the city center.

The Wrest Point Casino was Australia’s first legal casino and it’s about a mile away from the area where most of the Hobart hostels are located. The buses are cheap and they connect the areas directly, but it’s only about a 30 minute walk along the coast.

And just because these places are called “backpackers” in Australia doesn’t mean they are only meant for young people who’ve never owned a real suitcase. In fact, people of all age groups stay in hostels in Australia, regardless of the luggage they are carrying.

And hostels in most countries are typically filled only with foreigners so it’s hard to get to know any locals while staying in them, but Australians love to travel so they often use the network of backpackers themselves. You are very likely to be staying with Australians in your hostel in Hobart, which can add a different flavor to your visit.

The Central City Backpackers is the closest hostel in Hobart to the wharf. Beds in their 8-bed dorms start around $AUD23 per night, with beds in their 4 and 6-bed rooms only a few dollars more. They also have private twin, double, and single rooms for those who want to mix a little privacy with their hostel stay. The doubles and twins start around $AUD35 per night while the singles go for around $AUD55 per night.

The Transit Centre Backpackers is also centrally located, and is just next to the Hobart Transit Centre, which is where buses from all over the state come and go. This is a great location if you need to catch that early morning bus, but several other Hobart hostels are close by so don’t worry if this one is booked up. Their cheapest beds are in their 8 and 10-bed dorms starting around $AUD19 per night, but they’ve also got rooms with fewer beds and a few private twin and double rooms for a few dollars more.
