Thanks to recently upgraded service at its airport, Hervey Bay is already drawing much bigger crowds and that trend seems like it will only increase. There are plenty of traditional hotels in the area, but fortunately for budget travelers there are also loads of hostels in Hervey Bay to keep things even more reasonably priced.

The area is most popular for its proximity to the Great Barrier Reef, and also to the sandy Fraser Island just off the coast. Whale Watching is also big in the Hervey Bay area, but thousands of people come to the area just to enjoy the near-perfect climate and relax. The city is made up of a string of villages and the population is around 50,000 total, but the area on the coast of the village of Torquay has the greatest concentration of services for visitors. Almost all the Hervey Bay hostels are bunched together in this small region so there are plenty of places to choose from and all have good locations.

Most of the nightlife and cafes and restaurants are located along the Esplanade that runs all along the shore in Torquay village. In high season the more highly rated places do sell out early so it’s advisable to lock in your reservation as soon as you can if you have one place in mind. With so many hostels in Hervey Bay all bunched together you know the better ones fill up first.

Also, if you aren’t from Australia or New Zealand you should know that hostels here are almost always called “backpackers” and sometimes by other names, but rarely as hostels. They all work in the exact same way though. Most have cheap dorm beds and many of them also have private rooms for 2 or 3 people as well, so those who like a little privacy and security can sleep in their own room and still take advantage of the lower prices and the community kitchens and so forth.

And unlike some other countries, Australians often check into hostels in their own country because the network of backpackers is a popular way to keep the budget down for a country that travels as much as this one does. And age limits, nighttime curfews, and daytime lockouts are pretty much things of the past. These days hostels are often used by older people and everything in between.

The Next Backpackers gets very high marks among previous guests. They have beds in their 10-bed dorms starting around $AUD22 per night, with other dorms only a bit more. They also have private double rooms with their own bathroom starting around $AUD32 per person, which is a great deal in this area. They’ve got internet access, a lounge, and a self-catering kitchen in addition to other special features like a cinema room. This place books up early so don’t hesitate if you know your dates.

The Aussie Woolshed Backpackers is another popular Hervey Bay hostel. They are a bit further from the beach, but their dorm beds start around $AUD18 per night, and they also have many small private rooms that are also inexpensive for the neighborhood.
