A stay in a Davenport hostel puts you on the northern tip of Tasmania, a perfect place from which to see the rest of the large island famous for its devils.

The island of Tasmania is thought to have been connected to mainland Australia as little as 10,000 years ago. Since then, the rising ocean levels have been pushing the coasts slightly farther away from each other, although the difference since the last ice age has been negligible.

Tasmania has many interesting sights to see on your trip around the island. Port Arthur, a former penal colony, offers a glimpse of what it was like to have been held in the work camp known as "hell on earth." Disclaimer: Port Arthur can be an upsetting experience for some. The ruins of the old jail are haunting and there are also humanitarian issues to consider, but for the detached history buff, the site is a thrill whether or not you see a ghost.

Easier to stomach are the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, in Hobart, the capital city of Tasmania. Full of natural beauty, the botanical gardens are a great place to relax, the gardens are open to everyone young and old and there are ducks you can feed near the water.

Devonport hostels allow you to stay on Tasmania, convenient to all the locations on the island you'd like to see. Prices at the Tasman backpackers inn in Devonport start at 9 Euros for a night in a five or seven bed dorm, and increase to only 15 Euros a night for a Queen sized bed in a room with its own bathroom. Just 2 km from Devonport's Central Business District, the hostel is in a prime location with a very affordable rate.

Also in Devonport, the central "Molly Malones Irish Backpackers" offers rooms for 10 Euros, private or shared, and the convenience of staying right in the heart of Devonport's Central Business District. Molly Malones harkens to an older Australian lodging custom of renting out rooms above bars for over-imbibing patrons who need a place for the night. Molly Malones is located directly above a cheerful Irish pub, which is one step better than your average hostel common room.

Tasmania is full of sights and hidden secrets, and the staff of either hostel will be able to give you a full rundown of the area's nightlife and entertainment options. One creepy option is to take a tour through the branching military tunnels that were built into Devonport. For a more traditional night, the Bourbon Street Restaurant and Bar serves up New Orleans style jambalaya, gumbo and crawfish as well as a top selection of live jazz and other music until about 1 am.
