One of the most isolated cities on earth, Darwin is growing fast and becoming an extremely popular destination for people wanting something a bit different. The tropical climate and wonderful beaches make it a treat for adventurous Australians, but its location so close to Asia makes it a popular stop for people on round the world trips as well. There are many hotels in the city, but there are also plenty of hostels in Darwin that are ideal for most of the people who visit this unusual destination.

The scenery here is spectacular, and the national parks in the area are big attractions. The remoteness of the city keeps most families away so this really is a city meant for backpackers and independent travelers. The Darwin hostels are always filled with people who’ve just come from some other exotic location, so you are bound to meet some interesting people here.

And in case you aren’t from Australia (or New Zealand) hostels in this part of the world are called “backpackers” but they are exactly the same thing. And just as elsewhere, the hostel scene in Australia is becoming more and more welcoming to all kinds of travelers and not just kids who’ve never owned a normal suitcase. Australians themselves are very frequent travelers so you’ll likely be meeting many of them no matter where you go. And the network of backpackers/hostels is a well-known way to travel on the cheap and have some fun in the process, so you’ll see budget travelers in all age groups at most of the larger Darwin hostels.

Most of the hostels in Darwin have private rooms in addition to the cheaper dorms. These are almost always cheaper than nearby hotels so they are a great way for a single or a small group to sleep with some privacy but still get most of the fun associated with hostel life. The community rooms are great places to meet people, and the community kitchens come in really handy for those wanting to save a bit by buying one or two meals a day on their own.

Most of the hostels in Darwin are bunched closely together in the popular area near the beach at Bicentennial Park. You can save a few dollars by booking a Darwin hostel a few blocks off the Esplanade, but you have to wonder whether it’s worth coming all this way to get here and then trying to save a few dollars with a less desirable location.

The Melaleuca on Mitchell Backpacker is a new and huge hostel with over 450 beds and a great location near the beach area. Their cheapest beds are in their 6-bed dorm rooms starting around $AUD25 per night, but they’ve also got private rooms for either 2 or 4 people starting around $AUD30 and $AUD45 per person, respectively. This place is getting great reviews from former guests, and their ideal location will make this place popular during peak season so it’s wise to book as soon as you are sure of your dates.
