Book the Best Hostels in Chiang Mai

Australia Hostels

There are many hostels in Chiang Mai offering incredibly low prices, but you’ll also find many hotels listed on the Chiang Mai hostels page as well. This is especially useful because it helps point out the various options in the bargain basement category. It’s pretty easy to book a dorm bed in a hostel in Chiang Mai for under $US5 per night, but it’s almost as easy to book a private room in a hotel for just a couple dollars more.

If you like those dorm beds you can book yourself into the Chiang Mai five stars Hosteling International for under $US4 per night. Where else can you book into a five stars place for that little money? But if you are like most people and you prefer a little privacy when you can afford it the place also offers private single rooms for around $US7 per night and private doubles for $US5 per person, with ensuites in both.

The temptation to book yourself into such an incredibly cheap place may be great, but before you lock yourself into the lowest priced Chiang Mai hostel on the page you might also consider that this could be a rare opportunity to stay at a really nice place for only a few dollars more.

Looking back at the thousands you spent on your trip, is it really worth it to try to save $US5 per night by finding the cheapest hostel in Chiang Mai? For around $US8 per night per person you can stay at the Chiang Mai International Youth Hostel in a private double room with its own bathroom. They are a new Chiang Mai hostel with a good location and they even offer free wifi throughout the hostel. Some of the places where you’d save $US2 per night are older buildings that might be long on local charm, but certainly not on comfort.

Many of the cheaper hostels in Chiang Mai offer their lowest priced rooms with no air conditioning. This isn’t as much of an issue here as it is down south in Bangkok because the nights tend to be cooler, but during the peak humidity season around April it might still be worth paying a bit more for that air conditioning.

If you are in the mood for a minor splurge and still want to keep things affordable you could opt for the Baantai Hotel, which is built in the style of a Northern Thailand teak house. For a bit over $US10 per night you get free breakfast, cable TV, a swimming pool, a refrigerator, and many other amenities normally found in more expensive places.

Starting around $US15 per person you can book yourself into the Suandoihouse Hotel & Resort. It’s somewhere between a hotel and a resort, with lush gardens throughout the grounds. In much of the world you can’t even afford to sleep on a park bench for that price, so being able to stay at a resort instead of a traditional hostel in Chiang Mai might be worth it for novelty value alone.
