Australia Hostels

Cape Tribulation hostels are near the beach of the idyllic Daintree National Park on the Queensland coast.

Lt James Cook named Cape Tribulation after his ship ran aground on the beach on June 10, 1770. For those who visit today, however, the cape offers more relaxation than tribulation and the jungle behind the beach is pure bonus.

If you're staying at a Cape Tribulation hostel in order to see and enjoy the jungle, however, you might check out the jungle canopy surfing tours that take you through the top of the tropical rain forest with interpretive stops and information about the rainforest at each station. It would probably be best for the severe acrophobics (fear of heights) to skip this one, although the rigs are very secure and even small children feel safe enough to enjoy the activity.

While you're surfing the tops of the trees, your less adventurous companions might try spending some time at the Cape Tribulation Exotic Fruit Farm. With an orchard of 2000 fruit trees, the Exotic Fruit farm provides tours each day at 2 p.m. and allows you to sample fruit from around the world that was cultivated at the sight. Try the chocolate pudding fruit and the creme caramel fruit to see if they live up to their names.

At the north end of Cape Tribulation, the Cape Trib Beach House has rooms starting at 15 Euros a night, but there is something for everyone at this beach-front budget resort. With everything from secluded, romantic cabins to the multi-bunk rooms that can be had for the cheapest price, all sorts of travelers end up at the Cape Trib Beach House to enjoy the rainforest and picturesque waterfront accommodations.

To the south, the remote Crocodylus Village is built to feel like it is part of the rainforest. Although it is close to two of the more popular resort towns, travelers spend most of their time in the lush rainforest. Crocodylus Village generates their own electricity, has a general store and employs locals to show its guests the possible activities and events going on. Rooms in Crocodylus Village start at a similarly priced 14 Euros a night, but the accommodations are geared more toward the backpacking traveler or families than the couple looking for a romantic getaway. Rooms are equipped with either four or six beds and cabins are set back off the beach.

The Great Barrier Reef is also just a few miles off the coast of Cape Tribulation and easily accessible with the boats available for charter. Up the inland creeks from the ocean, crocodiles can be seen and viewed on guided tours.

Rain may be an issue on your vacation, the average rainfall for Cape Tribulation is 5.6 meters. It is a rainforest, after all. The best time to visit, then, is the dry season, from July-November. Later in the dry season is usually better as the temperatures have a chance to warm up.
