Book the Best Hostels in Blue Mountains

Australia Hostels

The Blue Mountains are famous for their blue haze hanging over the valley in their center. The only town of any size in the region is Katoomba so for Blue Mountains hostel purposes they are synonymous, although there are a few places listed directly in the city of Katoomba as well, so it’s worth checking both before you make the final decision on your Blue Mountains hostel. Places near the Katoomba train station are listed under the Katoomba hostels, while places close to Echo Point are listed here.

Hotels in the Blue Mountains are expensive, particularly in peak season. This area is extremely popular as a weekend getaway for local Sydneysiders, so if you are visiting as part of a longer trip you might be best off trying to book your hostel in the Blue Mountains for weekdays. You’ll have a better chance of getting the place you want and it’s likely to be less expensive as well.

Katoomba is a small town, even though it’s the largest city in the Blue Mountains. The main street is, not surprisingly, Katoomba Street, and most of the center of the city is on or within one block of it. Echo Point is within walking distance at the far end of town from the train station, or you can get on the tourist trolley that stops there in addition to most other lookout points and trail heads in the area.

There are only a few real hostels in the Blue Mountains, and a couple of them are listed under the city of Katoomba, so again, look there if you are dead set on a cheap bed in a dorm room. There is one other hostel in the city, which is listed here, but several other budget accommodations you should also consider.

The Blue Mountains YHA is the only dorm-style hostel listed here, and it’s got a great location in the center of the village. Beds in their 6 and 8-bed rooms start around $AUD24 per night, but if you are traveling in a pair you might also consider their private double rooms. Without bathrooms the doubles start around $AUD36 per night and the ones with their own bathrooms are $AUD5 more. These private doubles are a great deal compared to the hotels in the area and the location is nearly perfect. They’ve got common lounges and a common kitchen so you can save yourself some money by shopping at the large grocery store nearby and cooking for yourself.

The Katoomba Town Center Motel isn’t a hostel at all, but they have an excellent location in the center of town and their prices are almost as low as some of the nearby Blue Mountain hostels with dorm rooms. Their twin and double rooms start around $AUD43 per night per person, and a full buffet breakfast can be yours for just $AUD12 more. This is actually a fairly fancy motel with color TVs and everything, so if you are thinking of a private room you should compare this one to the hotels rather than the hostels in the Blue Mountains because it’s far more luxurious than the hostels in the area.
