Book the Best Hostels in Bendigo
This beautiful town first boomed during the 1850s gold rush, and these days the city is growing rapidly again due to its pleasant historic center, good weather, and proximity to the wine country. There are a handful of pricy hotels in town, but there is a proper hostel in Bendigo, as well as a couple of other budget places where travelers can get good value during their stay.
The city boasts over 300 days of sunshine each year, making it one of the sunniest cities in the country. The summers do get hot and dry and the winters tend to be mild, but overnight temperatures below freezing are fairly common during July and August. With a population now of about 90,000 the city and its tourism industry is growing. There should be more Bendigo hostels opening in the coming years to satisfy the demand.
And by the way, in case you aren’t from this part of the world, in Australia and New Zealand hostels are called “backpackers” although they are the exact same thing. And in the past decade or two the backpackers scene has transformed in Australia just as it has elsewhere. The days of daytime lock-outs and nighttime curfews are pretty much over. And almost all hostels in the country also cater to all ages these days. A few still have age limits for their dorm rooms, but most are open to all. In fact, Australians are very frequent travelers all over their own country so it’s very likely you’ll be staying with some of them when you check into your Bendigo hostel.
And the name “backpackers” might make it sound like people with other types of luggage wouldn’t be welcome, but this isn’t the case. Throughout Australia the backpackers network is a very well known way for budget travelers of all ages and luggage-types to stay cheaply in a central location. And most backpackers now have private rooms in addition to their famous dorms. Staying in a private room can be a great way to sleep with some privacy and security but still be able to take advantage of all the common facilities, scheduled activities, and lower prices that come along with them.
The Bendigo Backpackers YHA is the only true hostel in Bendigo at the moment. They are located just 2 short blocks off the Pall Mall strip that marks the center of the city. Their cheapest beds are in their 7-bed dorms starting around $AUD26 per night. They also have private twin and double rooms starting around $AUD68 per person. They’ve got a great location and the usual hostel services, but if you are looking for a private room you might compare prices elsewhere.
The Hotel Shamrock is over 100 years old and is one of the most famous landmarks in the city. The location basically marks the center of the Pall Mall strip. They don’t have dorms as they are a proper hotel, but their private rooms start around $AUD72 per person so if you are looking for a private room anyway it might be the most fun to stay in a landmark building instead of a Bendigo hostel.
