Book the Best Hostels in Bali - Kuta
Kuta Beach is by far the most popular place for visitors to Bali, but there aren’t many traditional hostels in Kuta. The main reason for this is that small hotels and guesthouses tend to be so cheap that it’s not worth it to most people to try to save a tiny amount to sleep in a large dorm room with strangers. Things may change, but for now the only Kuta hostel isn’t really a hostel, although it does have shared rooms.
The Kuta Beach area is filled with bars, restaurants, craft shops, and loads of hotels and guesthouses. In the last decade or so Kuta has also enveloped the northern beach area of Legion, so in the Kuta hostel listings you’ll see the entire area covered. Since it’s so close to the International Airport and also has great beaches, the Kuta area is definitely worth checking out and staying at least a night, but in many ways Kuta is the opposite of the beauty and tranquility many people seek on their Bali holiday.
Once you arrive you’ll discover nearly everything is really cheap compared to just about anywhere else you’ve been, and especially compared to any place this gorgeous and magical. A few thousand miles from here are South Pacific Islands where everything is at least 5 to 10 times as expensive. Hotels in Kuta can range from super cheap up to posh resorts, which are still quite cheap by most other standards.
Since normal hotels and guesthouses are so affordable the owners will often list them as Kuta hostels so budget travelers can find their listings and are aware of how cheap private rooms can be. Finding a nice room for between $US10 and $US15 per person is rarely a problem, which is precisely why there is little demand for traditional hostels in Kuta.
Another draw for hostels is your ability to use the kitchen facilities to save money on your food, but in Kuta and all over Bali you can eat very well for $US1 or $US2 per meal, so forget about cooking yourself.
The only real trick to booking a hotel or hostel in Kuta is whether you want air conditioning or just a fan in your room. About half the year has perfect weather during the days and warm, dry evenings. If you are coming during the so-called dry season a fan in your room should be enough, but if you are coming during the rainy season you should seriously consider paying a bit extra for a place with aircon.
Days during rainy season in Bali tend to be scorching and sticky, and the nights are almost as bad. Some people can drift off into a pleasant sleep in such conditions, but other people have to drink themselves silly just to hope to knock themselves out long enough to fall asleep during the super muggy nights.
Places right on the beach tend to be a bit more expensive than places a block or two inland, but unless your hotel or hostel in Kuta has a balcony or beach view, it might not be worth paying extra because the area is so small that every place is just a few extra steps to the beach anyway.
