Australia Hostels

On the coast in Western Australia, Albany's hostels are located in the largest town in the region and home to 30,000 of Australia's people. Buoyed by a moderate tourism industry, the town has recovered from the loss of its first industry: whaling.

The whaling station in Albany is closed down now, but it is still available for tours and you can see the boats that whalers used to hunt. The station closed its operations in 1979 and at the time that it shut down it was the only whaling station in operation in the southern hemisphere.

Other sights to see in Albany include the Patrick Taylor Cottage, which is older than any other dwelling in Western Australia and was built around 1832. The Princess Royal Fortess (or 'The Forts') and the Albany Convict Gaol, are other historical sights that typically tempt Albany's tourists.

The HMAS Perth sank in King George sound and is now a popular place for diving, just off the coast of Albany, and in the realm of natural sights to see, on the coast of Albany lies "The Gap," sheer cliffs with ocean swirling at the bottom—an imposing, impressive sight that might tempt Evil Knievel were he not retired—as well as the Natural Bridge, a rock formation that looks exactly like it sounds.

Albany hostels have widely varying prices. Rooms start at 16 Euros, but quickly jump to 50 Euros if a budget hostel fills up and you are forced to seek accommodations somewhere else. If traveling to Albany, especially in the high tourist season, it would be smart to book online in advance so you don't get relegated to some other form of lodging and end up paying a ton more.

The Albany Backpackers and Albany Discovery Inn are the two most affordable options for hostels in Albany and the two hostels also offer private rooms for only a slight increase in price. They also offer free breakfast with your stay.

Albany's climate is comparable to the Mediterranean, with pleasant summertime highs and a noticeable but not severe cooling during the winter months. Although Albany is in the southern part of Australia, there is plenty of sun and heat to enjoy the beaches and ocean.

Although Albany's population doesn't necessarily mean a booming nightlife or social scene, there is a functional and exciting bar and club scene that ebbs and flows with the number of tourists in the city. Many of the hotels have bars or dance clubs in their floors, but these can be hit and miss. Luckily most Albany hostels are located near the hotels and it is not hard to find a crowd going in that direction from a hostel.

Some local travelers also go to Albany on their tours of the country and many stay in hostels. Hostel common rooms are great places to meet locals and to find a group to tag along with as you hop from bar to bar all night and enjoy the scene.
