Australia Hostels

Nearly all of the Adelaide hostels available for travelers are located in the inner city of Adelaide. This means they are within the city's ring of parks that circle the town and convenient to many of the major businesses and shops that make up downtown Adelaide.

Adelaide is arranged in a grid, with inner and outer sections with beautiful parks demarcating the borders. Originally planned by Colonel William Light, the city has since outgrown the original vision of the city and there are some hostels outside of the main square.

The Glenelg beach hostel, for example, is situated alone on the coast and is the destination of choice for anyone looking to spend time on Adelaide's beaches. Starting at 15 Euros for a night, the Glenelg hostel is similarly priced to the other hostels in Adelaide, but nearer the soft sand beaches and early morning waves.

Other than the beach, Adelaide has many attractions that would entice the average visitor. Nearly every guidebook covering Adelaide recommends the South Australia Museum for anyone that wants to learn about the native aboriginal culture that inhabited Australia before the British arrived in the 18th century.

Also popular, the Adelaide Zoo and Botanical Garden draw visitors to the city, but are frequented by locals as well. You can tour the local wildlife as well as some international imports at the Adelaide Zoo and the Botanical Gardens are a lush way to wind down and relax if your vacation is stressing you out.

Adelaide hostels are clustered in the center of the city—many are a stone's throw from each other—so you'll know where to go when you arrive in the city, but if you know the dates of your visit, booking online ahead of time will save you from getting stuck in a more expensive lodging option if your hostel fills up.

Like most hostels in Australia, Adelaide hostels fill up with locals traveling around the country. Setting up in the common room of a hostel is a good way to meet people and add get the inside scoop on which local sights are "can't miss" excursions and which will make you ask for your guidebook money back.

You also might find someone who can give you the tour of the local pub scene. Adelaide's nightlife revolves around Hindley Street and Rundle street, but like any scene catering to a college aged crowd, the coolest places pop up and disappear faster than travel guides can copyedit their books, so you may want to try to befriend a local so that you can find the new hot club.

For reliable good times, Hindley Street, in the north part of the West End, is a traditional Adelaide hang out, full of venues for live music where everyone can find something to relax and enjoy. For a swankier night out, Rundle Street, also in the north, but on the east side of the city, has bars with a higher standard of dress and a higher cover charge.
